I’ve now been using the August Smart Lock for more than two weeks. I originally posted 24 hours after installation and I think the post stands, but here are few additional comments. Bottom line: I’m happier now than I was right away. And I’m going to install the second lock in our basement.
Auto Unlock: It does seem to work, most of the time. I haven’t figured out why it doesn’t work when it doesn’t. It might be because we are using the lock manually to unlock the door when the doorbell rings (the app takes too long to register and unlock, kind of impolite to make guests wait for the app to work!). Maybe we are not locking or unlocking it when using it manually? When it works, however, it’s sort of like magic.
Everlock: Still don’t know about this feature (which makes sure the lock is always locked within a certain time after you unlock the door). When you leave, you don’t know if someone else locked the door or someone else unlocked without the Everlock feature turned on. And you odn’t know why the door is unlocked if you find it that way!
Guest passes: I didn’t mention this in the original post, but I’ve always thought part of the proposition is managing digital keys for people with smart phones. I only just figured out where this is. August’s use of the IOS UX is so good that it is hard to find things like this. (Need to swipe right from the main screen!) But it seems to work well and should be part of the original review!
Also, just for kudos, CEO Jason Johnson’s comments on my post are entirely fair and he shows a great attitude for a company that is just getting started!
